About Shingle Springs, California
Located about 40 miles easy of Sacramento, Shingle Springs is a census-designated place of about 4,432 residents, an increase of about 68% since 2000. This area became a village around 1848, when gold miners came to seek their fortune. The town's name comes from a shingle mill that produced up to 16,000 shingles per day and cold springs which ran through the town. The first post office opened in 1853, and while the name of the town was changed to Shingle in 1895, it was reverted to Shingle Springs in 1955. The original residents of the area were the Maidu Indians, who had a settlement named Bamom nearby. Today, the Maidu and Miwok people have a headquarters in Shingle Springs. The Red Hawk Casino on the Shingle Springs Rancheria is a major attraction in the area. Residents of Shingle Springs move here for rural living, good schools, and proximity to the Sacramento Valley, other Gold Country attractions, and Lake Tahoe. Winters are mild, summers are slightly warm.
