The History of Penryn, California
Penryn started in 1864 as a granite quarry on rented land from Union Pacific Railroad, with a railroad siding and "company store" built right afterwards. It wasn't until 1869 that other businesses were built. In 1871, Penryn became a voting precinct in Placer County, and in 1873 a Post Office was built. The Griffith Quarry (which is now a park, museum, and historical landmark) was the town's main employer until the mid-1890, when fruit orchards and packing became the community's main economic driver.
Today, about 843 residents live in Penryn, which is about 5.5 miles northeast of Rocklin. The town is noted for rural atmosphere, good schools, and proximity to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada Foothills and Sacramento Valley.
